Reductions in Claim Payouts for Not Securing Shutters

Often when a storm is approaching it is unclear when a property owner should hang and secure the shutters. Until now there has been no clear answer provided by the terms of each individual property insurance policy. However, some insurance companys now REQUIRE shutters to be secured in order to receive the full amount of the claim payout due as a result of any storm related loss.

Citizens Property has recently declared that a penalty will apply if a homeowner fails to secure shutters or other opening protection devices during a tropical storm, hurricane watch and/or hurricane warning issued from the National Weather Service in Florida. Effective September 1, 2012 for new business and October 1st, 2012 for renewal business Citizens Property claim payments will be reduced by 9 percent for Class B Protection and 15 percent for Class A Protection not in place at the time of the storm.

While not all carriers have this requirement in place, Harbor Insurance recommends the securing of shutters and other protective devices any time there is a tropical storm, hurricane watch and/or warning. For your safety and security as well as assisting in reduction in overall damage to your property, utilize your homes protection devices.

Utilize your homes protective devices and hang your shutters when a storm is approaching no matter how big or small it may seem. Be prepared! Be Protected!
